The Work of Christ in the Redemption of Mankind.

The Ransom of Mankind from the power of sin, death and Satan, by the mighty deliverance accomplished by Christ on the Cross of Calvary, is the main theme of this section. Man is lost in sin, alienated from God, without God and without hope in the world. Jesus is the ‘lamb of God’ whose life was given in sacrifice to redeem us. His blood redeems us, and justifies us and separates us from our sin, cleansing us from all unrighteousness.

Here are some biblical words in relation to redemption and their meanings.

Salvation:This word is used of the deliverance of the Israelites from the Egyptians (Exo_14:13), and of deliverance generally from evil or danger. In the New Testament it is specially used with reference to the great deliverance from the guilt and the pollution of sin wrought out by Jesus Christ, “the great salvation” (Heb_2:3).Easton’s Bible dictionary

Grace: a. This common grace is the operation of the Holy Spirit he, exercises such a moral influence upon the  man that sin is restrained, order is maintained in social life, and civil righteousness is promoted, or,
b. Those general blessings which God imparts to all men without any distinction as he sees fit. Berkhof P. 121

Redemption: The purchase back of something that had been lost, by the payment of a ransom. The Greek word so rendered is apolutrosis, a word occurring nine times in Scripture, and always with the idea of a ransom or price paid, i.e., redemption by a lutron (see Mat_20:28; Mar_10:45). Eastons Bible Dictionary.

Atonement: This word does not occur in the Authorized Version of the New Testament except in Rom_5:11, where in the Revised Version the word “reconciliation” is used. In the Old Testament it is of frequent occurrence.
The meaning of the word is simply at-one-ment, i.e., the state of being at one or being reconciled, so that atonement is reconciliation. Thus it is used to denote the effect which flows from the death of Christ.

Propitiation: PROPITIATION, n. propisia'shon.
1. The act of appeasing wrath and conciliating the favor of an offended person; the act of making propitious.
2. In theology, the atonement or atoning sacrifice offered to God to assuage his wrath and render him propitious to sinners. Christ is the propitiation for the sins of men. Rom 3. 1 John 2.
Webster’s Dictionary

Fausset says “In Rom_3:25, hilastrion, "the propitiatory" or mercy seat, the bloodsprinkled lid of the ark, the meeting place between God and His people represented by the priest (1Jo_2:2; 1Jo_4:10).HIlasmos, abstract for concrete noun. He, Christ, is all that is needed for propitiation in behalf of our sins, the propitiatory sacrifice provided by the Father's love removing the estrangement, appearing God's righteous wrath against the sinner. A father may be offended with a son, yet all the while love him. It answers in Septuagint to Hebrew kaphar, kippurim to effect an atonement or reconciliation with God (Num_5:8; Heb_2:17), "to make reconciliation for ... sins," literally, to expiate the sins, eeilaskesteeai. Psa_32:1, "blessed is he whose sin is covered."

Substitution: SUBSTITU'TION, n. The act of putting one person or thing in the place of another to supply its place; as the substitution of an agent, attorney or representative to act for one in his absence; the substitution of banknotes for gold and silver, as a circulating medium. Webster’s
He died in our place. See Isaiah 53. He was wounded for our transgressions…….

Reconciliation: A change from enmity to friendship. It is mutual, i.e., it is a change wrought in both parties who have been at enmity.
(1.) In Col_1:21, Col_1:22, the word there used refers to a change wrought in the personal character of the sinner who ceases to be an enemy to God by wicked works, and yields up to him his full confidence and love. In 2Co_5:20 the apostle beseeches the Corinthians to be “reconciled to God”, i.e., to lay aside their enmity.

Pardon: The forgiveness of sins granted freely (Isa_43:25), readily (Neh_9:17; Psa_86:5), abundantly (Isa_55:7; Rom_5:20). Pardon is an act of a sovereign, in pure sovereignty, granting simply a remission of the penalty due to sin, but securing neither honour nor reward to the pardoned. Justification (q.v.), on the other hand, is the act of a judge, and not of a sovereign, and includes pardon and, at the same time, a title to all the rewards and blessings promised in the covenant of life.

Justification: A forensic term, opposed to condemnation.
As regards its nature, it is the judicial act of God, by which he pardons all the sins of those who believe in Christ, and accounts, accepts, and treats them as righteous in the eye of the law, i.e., as conformed to all its demands. In addition to the pardon (q.v.) of sin, justification declares that all the claims of the law are satisfied in respect of the justified. It is the act of a judge and not of a sovereign. The law is not relaxed or set aside, but is declared to be fulfilled in the strictest sense; and so the person justified is declared to be entitled to all the advantages and rewards arising from perfect obedience to the law (Rom_5:1-10).
It proceeds on the imputing or crediting to the believer by God himself of the perfect righteousness, active and passive, of his Representative and Surety, Jesus Christ (Rom_10:3-9). Justification is not the forgiveness of a man without righteousness, but a declaration that he possesses a righteousness which perfectly and for ever satisfies the law, namely, Christ's righteousness (2Co_5:21; Rom_4:6-8). Easton’’s

Regeneration: Only found in Mat_19:28 and Tit_3:5. This word literally means a “new birth.” The Greek word so rendered (palingenesia) is used by classical writers with reference to the changes produced by the return of spring. In Mat_19:28 the word is equivalent to the “restitution of all things” (Act_3:21). In Tit_3:5 it denotes that change of heart elsewhere spoken of as a passing from death to life (1Jo_3:14); becoming a new creature in Christ Jesus (2Co_5:17); being born again (Joh_3:5); a renewal of the mind (Rom_12:2); a resurrection from the dead (Eph_2:6); a being quickened (Eph_2:1, Eph_2:5).
This change is ascribed to the Holy Spirit. It originates not with man but with God (Joh_1:12, Joh_1:13; 1Jo_2:29; 1Jo_5:1, 1Jo_5:4).
As to the nature of the change, it consists in the implanting of a new principle or disposition in the soul; the impartation of spiritual life to those who are by nature “dead in trespasses and sins.”
The necessity of such a change is emphatically affirmed in Scripture (Joh_3:3; Rom_7:18; Rom_8:7-9; 1Co_2:14; Eph_2:1; Eph_4:21-24). Easton’s

Sanctification: Involves more than a mere moral reformation of character, brought about by the power of the truth: it is the work of the Holy Spirit bringing the whole nature more and more under the influences of the new gracious principles implanted in the soul in regeneration. In other words, sanctification is the carrying on to perfection the work begun in regeneration, and it extends to the whole man (Rom_6:13; 2Co_4:6; Col_3:10; 1Jo_4:7; 1Co_6:19). It is the special office of the Holy Spirit in the plan of redemption to carry on this work (1Co_6:11; 2Th_2:13).
Faith is instrumental in securing sanctification, inasmuch as it
(1.) secures union to Christ (Gal_2:20), and
(2.) brings the believer into living contact with the truth, whereby he is led to yield obedience “to the commands, trembling at the threatenings, and embracing the promises of God for this life and that which is to come.”
Perfect sanctification is not attainable in this life (1Ki_8:46; Pro_20:9; Ecc_7:20; Jam_3:2; 1Jo_1:8). See Paul's account of himself in Rom_7:14-25; Phi_3:12-14; and 1Ti_1:15; also the confessions of David (Psa_19:12, Psa_19:13; 51), of Moses (Psa_90:8), of Job (Job_42:5, Job_42:6), and of Daniel (Dan. 9:3-20). “The more holy a man is, the more humble, self-renouncing, self-abhorring, and the more sensitive to every sin he becomes, and the more closely he clings to Christ.

The Person of Our Lord Jesus: The Ascended Exalted Sovereign Christ.

Memorize:
Php 2:9  Therefore God has highly exalted Him, and has given Him a name which is above every name,
Php 2:10  that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of heavenly ones, and of earthly ones, and of ones under the earth;
Php 2:11  and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

1Pe 3:21  which figure now also saves us, baptism; not a putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ;
1Pe 3:22  who is at the right hand of God, having gone into Heaven, where the angels and authorities and powers are being subjected to Him.

Eph 1:19  and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us, the ones believing according to the working of His mighty strength
Eph 1:20  which He worked in Christ in raising Him from the dead, and He seated Him at His right hand in the heavenlies,
Eph 1:21  far above all principality and authority and power and dominion, and every name being named, not only in this world, but also in the coming age.
Eph 1:22  And He has put all things under His feet and gave Him to be Head over all things to the church,

Questions for Research and Review.

  1. Christ ascended and was taken up into Glory where He reigns from the Father’s Right Hand. Why is the right hand of God a significant place for Christ?
1Pe 3:22  who is at the right hand of God, having gone into Heaven, where the angels and authorities and powers are being subjected to Him.
     2. Why was Jesus slowly taken up from the Mount of Olives in broad daylight in front of His disciples?
     3. Why is Matthew 28:18 so important for the Risen ascended Christ?
     4.  What does Christ control from the Right Hand of God the Father, with reference to the following verses?
1 Cor 11:3………………………………………………………………….
Colossians 2:10…………………………………………………………..
1 Peter 3:22………………………………………………………………..
Romans 14:9 ……………………………………………………………..
Philippians 2:10 -11……………………………………………………….

Christ possesses Universal Sovereignty to be exercised for the good of the church which is His Body.  Therefore in a very special sense Christ is Head of the Church.  Note the following ways he exercises this power.
  1. By the way He exercises authority over the members of the Church. Paul uses the MARRIAGE RELATIONSHIP as an illustration of Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:22-33. Marriage is a “Mystery” which reveals the spiritual union between Christ and the Church.
  2. The risen ascended Christ is not just the ruling directing power in the church, but also the source of its life and energy. As the vine to its branches, as a head to a body, so is the Living Christ to His Church. The Holy Spirit is the bond of communication btween Christ and His Church.
Eph 4:15  But that you, speaking the truth in love, may in all things grow up to Him who is the Head, even Christ;
Eph 4:16  from whom the whole body, fitted together and compacted by that which every joint supplies, according to the effectual working in the measure of each part, producing the growth of the body to the edifying of itself in love.
Colossians 2:18  Let no one defraud you, delighting in humility and worship of the angels, intruding into things which he has not seen, without a cause being vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
Col 2:19  and not holding the Head, from whom all the body, having been supplied through the joints and bands, and having been joined together, will grow with the growth of God.
The Body Of Christ by Jessica Wells

Barnes Notes:And not holding the Head - Not holding the true doctrine respecting the Great Head of the church, the Lord Jesus Christ; Notes, Eph_1:22. This is regarded here as essential to the maintenance of all the other doctrines of religion. He who has just views of the Redeemer will not be in much danger of erring respecting the other points of religious belief.
From which all the body ... - This passage is almost word for word the same as in Eph_4:15-16.

Application

The Headship of Christ over His Church is so important. We are subject to ‘Popes or Fathers’ but to the Lord Jesus Christ who had right and authority to direct all things in the Church by His Word.
Are you submitted to the Lordship of Jesus Christ?

The Person of our Lord Jesus Christ His Work: His Resurrection.

Notes from Myer Pearlman. Knowing the Doctrines of the Bible. Pps 172-174
  1. The Fact of the Resurrection

The Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ is the Miracle of Christianity.  Once we establish the Reality of this event, discussion of all other miracles of the Gospels is unnecessary. This is the Miracle upon which the whole of Christianity stands or falls.
Christianity is a Historical Religion basing its teachings upon definite events that occurred in Israel about Two Thousand years ago.
These events are the Virgin Birth, the Ministry of Jesus Christ culminating in His Death Burial and Resurrection. The Resurrection is the capstone, for, if Christ be not risen, then he is not what he claimed to be, His Death was not an atoning death, then Christians have been deceived for centuries. Preachers have been declaring error and there is no hope of Salvation.
“But now is Christ risen, the firstfruits of them that slept.”
The Tomb was empty. see the place where Christ lay.

    2. The Evidence for the Resurrection.

The French skeptic taunted,"You Christians live in the fragrance of an empty tomb.” It is true that those who came to the tomb on that Easter morning to embalm the body of Jesus found the tomb empty. This fact cannot be explained apart from the Resurrection of Jesus. The Jews could have refuted the teaching of the First apostles by producing the body. But they did not and could not.

The Christian Church would not exist without the resurrection of our Lord. Jesus was not dead but alive was the Message of the Early Church.

What shall we do with the eyewitness accounts of those who saw the Lord Jesus after His Resurrection, who handled Him and ate with Him; hundred of whom the Apostle Paul said were alive till his day.. Many of them have given witness in the New Testament Epistles.

How shall we explain the Conversion of the chief persecutor of the church, Paul, if he did not see Christ on the road to Damascus.
'Christ Arose' is the Clear Message of the early Church and the Apostles and others were willing to lay down their Lives for the truth of the Message of the Resurrection.

Many have tried to deny the fact or evade the fact. The Jewish leaders contended that the disciples came and stole the body away. They even bribed the guards at the tomb to say such lies. How could the timid little band of disciples have wrested the body out of the hands of the Roman soldiers who were armed and guarding the tomb.

The disciples just dreamed this up was the explanation of the so-called scholars of our day. How could hundreds have the same vision and imagine that they were really seeing Jesus after His death. This weak explanations carries its own refutation.
The Resurrection of Jesus cannot be called into doubt any more than the historic certainty that Caesar was assassinated.

     3.The Meaning  of the Resurrection.

It means that Jesus Christ was all that He claimed to be.  the Son of God, the Saviour of the World and Lord of all.
The answer of the world to His claims was the CROSS; God's answer to the cross and His claims was the RESURRECTION.
It means that the Atoning Death of Christ was a reality and that man may find forgiveness for his past sins and so find peace with God.

Rom 4:24  it was for our sakes too. Faith, before long, will be placed to the credit of us also who are believers in Him who raised Jesus, our Lord, from the dead,
Rom 4:25  who was surrendered to death because of the offences we had committed, and was raised to life because of the acquittal secured for us.

The Resurrection was really the completion of the Atoning death of Christ for us. He rose again to show he had purchased our acquittal.
Now we have a Risen glorified and sympathetic High Priest in heaven interceding for us. Romans 8:3 and Hebrews 7:25

JESUS HAS COME BACK TO LIFE THEN WE SHALL LIVE ALSO.
The resurrection of Christ gives not only proof of the fact of Immortality but also CARRIES THE ASSURANCE OF OUR PERSONAL IMMORTALITY.

Joh 14:19  Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me: because I live, you also shall live.
2Co 4:14  For we know that He who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will raise us also to be with Jesus, and will cause both us and you to stand in His own presence.
Barnes Notes on v.14
Knowing - Being fully confident; having the most entire assurance. It was the assured hope of the resurrection which sustained them in all their trials. This expression denotes the full and unwavering belief, in the minds of the apostles, that the doctrines which they preached were true. They knew that they were revealed from heaven, and that all the promises of God would be fulfilled.
Shall raise up us also - All Christians. In the hope of the resurrection they were ready to meet trials, and even to die. Sustained by this assurance, the apostles went forth amidst persecutions and opposition, for they knew that their trials would soon end, and that they would be raised up in the morning of the resurrection, to a world of eternal glory.

The Person of Our Lord Jesus Christ: His Work: The Cross and the Burial.

The Importance of Christian Burial.burial_jesus-720x340.jpg

Memorize:

Mat 27:57  When the evening had come, a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, came, who also himself was Jesus' disciple.
Mat 27:58  He went to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
Mat 27:59  When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in clean linen,
Mat 27:60  and laid it in his new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb and departed.

Rom 6:3  Do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death?
Rom 6:4  Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father; even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Rom 6:5  For if we have been joined together in the likeness of His death, we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection;
Rom 6:6  knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be destroyed, that from now on we should not serve sin.

1Co 15:3  For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received, that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures,
1Co 15:4  and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures;
Compare Luke 23:50-56
