The Person of Our Lord Jesus Christ : The Son of David.

This Title is Equivalent to ‘Messiah’, The Messiah had to be of Davidic descent.

Notes from Myer Pearlman: Knowing the Doctrines of the Bible. Pps 160 -  163

This important qualification of Messiah was promised to King David and fulfilled centuries later In  Our Lord Jesus Christ.
  1. The Promise.

2 Samuel 7:16  And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.
David was rewarded for His faith in God by this Promise of an everlasting Dynasty. This is know as the Davidic Covenant. So since that day for thousands of years the Nation of Israel is looking for the Great king and deliverer from the House of David. This was reiterated over and over by the prophets of israel to encourage Israel even though they were in bondage to the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks and the Romans; and finally their nation was decimated by the Gentiles and was destroyed and in desolation until 1948.

Jer 30:8  For it shall be in that day, says Jehovah of Hosts, I will break his yoke from your neck and will burst your bonds. And strangers shall no longer enslave him,
Jer 30:9  but they shall serve Jehovah their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up to them.
Jer 23:5  Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will raise to David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and act wisely, and shall do judgment and justice in the earth.
Eze 34:23  And I will set up one Shepherd over them, and He shall feed them, My servant David. He shall feed them, and He shall be their Shepherd. See also Is 55:3,4; Ps 89 :34-37
The Davidic Covenant - Chuck Missler

Isaiah 11:1

Isa 11:1  Then a shoot will come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from its roots will bear fruit.
Isa 11:2  The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him- the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of advice and power, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.
Isaiah 10 : 34. And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest - The army of the Assyrians, described here as a thick, dense forest; compare Isa_10:18-19.
With iron - As a forest is cut down with an axe, so the prophet uses this phrase here, to keep up and carry out the figure. The army was destroyed with the pestilence 2Ki_19:35; but it fell as certainly as a forest falls before the axe.
And Lebanon - Lebanon is here evidently descriptive of the army of the Assyrian, retaining the idea of a beautiful and magnificent forest. Thus, in Eze_31:3, it is said, ‘the king of the Assyrians was a cedar of Lebanon with fair branches.’ Lebanon is usually applied to the Jews as descriptive of them (Jer_22:6, Jer_22:23; Zec_10:10; 11: l), but it is evidently applied here to the Assyrian army; and the sense is, that that army should be soon and certainly destroyed, and that, therefore, the inhabitants of Jerusalem had no cause of alarm; see the notes at Isa. 37.Barnes Notes

Assyria, that cruel oppressor of Israel, is compared to a cedar tree, whose stump never puts out any shoots but rots slowly. Once cut down the stump has no future. And such describes the fate of Assyria.
Cedar stump
The House of David on the other hand, is compared to a tree which will put forth new growth from a stump left in the ground. The Jewish nation which was virtually destroyed and the house of David ceased to be a Royal house. It will be hewn down to a stump. Yet from that stump will come a shoot, from the roots of that stump will come THE BRANCH - THE KING-MESSIAH.

b.) The Fulfillment.

Judah went into the Babylonian Captivity. They returned without a king, without independence, subjected to Persia, Greece, Egypt, Syria and after a brief period of independence they were subject to ROME. For centuries they were subject to Gentile nations until they cried out.

Psa 89:49  Where is the evidence of your mercy, Lord? You swore an oath to David on the basis of your faithfulness (in Thy Truth).
Lord, where are thy former loving-kindnesses - hy merciesT; thy pledges; thy promises. Where are those promises which thou didst make formerly to David? Are they accomplished? Or are they forgotten and disregarded? They seem to be treated as a thing of nought; as if they had not been made. He relied on them; but they are not now fulfilled.
Which thou swarest unto David - Which thou didst solemnly promise, even with the implied solemnity of an oath.
In thy truth - Pledging thy veracity.  Barnes Notes

Israel never lost hope completely: they are still waiting for the Son of david to appear.

The Fulfillment in Jesus (Yeshua)

They were not disappointed. The Angel Gabriel, came to a Jewish girl and said
Luk 1:29  She was startled by what the angel said and tried to figure out what this greeting meant.
Luk 1:30  The angel told her, "Don't be afraid, Mary. You have found favor with God.
Luk 1:31  You will become pregnant, give birth to a son, and name him Jesus.
Luk 1:32  He will be a great man and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David.
Luk 1:33  Your son will be king of Jacob's people forever, and his kingdom will never end." G.W. Compare Is 9:6,7.
Gabriel anounces to Mary

A Deliverer, Yeshua, had arisen from the House of David. At a time when the House of David seemed to be at its lowest estate, when the living heirs were a humble carpenter and a simple maiden in Nazareth, then the Miracle occurred. by Gods amazing agency. The Branch sprouted up from the hewn-down stump and grew into a mighty tree that has provided shelter for many people.
The inspired prohets  spoke of the Davidic Covenant like this : Jehovah would come down for the salvation of His people, at which time there would be on earth a living descendant of the Davidic Family, through whom Jehovah would deliver and then rule His people. That Jesus was the Son of David is shown by the announcement at His Birth (see Matthew 1 and Luke 1). This shows the fact that He accepted the Title given to Him.Myer Pearlman

Mat 9:27  When Jesus left that place, two blind men followed him. They shouted, "Have mercy on us, Son of David."
Mat 20:30  Two blind men were sitting by the road. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
Mat 20:31  The crowd told them to be quiet. But they shouted even louder, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"

The New Testament Writers give Testimony to the fact.
Luke in Acts 13:23  "God had the Saviour, Jesus, come to Israel from David's descendants, as he had promised.
Paul in 2Ti 2:8  Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel,
John in Rev 5:5  And one of the elders said to me, Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the book and to loose the seven seals of it.

Jesus Himself, in Rev 22:16  I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify these things to you over the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the bright and Morning Star.

To be continued.
