The Person of Our Lord Jesus Christ: The Two Natures in Christ.

The Two Natures in the One Person. Notes from Louis Berkhof : The Summary of Christian Doctrine. and Myer Pearlman: Knowing the Doctrines of the Bible.

Memorize :Luk 19:10  For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
Mar 2:10  But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to pardon sins" --He turned to the paralytic, and said, Rise take up your bed and go home....
He actually suffered hunger Mat 4:2  And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterwards hungry.
2Co_5:21  For He has made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Christ has a human nature but He is not just a human person. The person of the Mediator is the unchangeable Son of God.
We have looked at the Person of the Son of God and His Divine Nature.

Now we will look at His Human Nature.

Son of man (Humanity)

  1. Relationship and Participation Notes from Myer Pearlman.
According to the Hebrew Usage, “son of” denotes relationship and participation. Eg., “Children of the Kingdom”, Matt 8:12 are those who are to share in the truths and Blessings of the Kingdom of God.
“Children of the Resurrection”, Luke 2:36 are those who partake in Resurrection life; a “son of Perdition” John 17:12 os one who is destined to taste of doom and ruin.
Therefore,
“Son of Man” means primarily “One who shares Human nature and Human Qualities. It becomes an Emphatic designation for man in his characteristic attributes of weakness and helplessness. It is a title used about 80 times in Ezekiel as a reminder of hsi weakness and mortality.
Applied to Christ, “Son of man” designates Him as sharing Human nature and qualities and subject to Human Infirmities. Yet at the same time, this very title implies His Deity. On the Lips of Jesus this title means “a heavenly One who had definitely identified Himself with Humanity as a Representative and Saviour.”
www.freerepublic.comThe battle against temptation in our lives is, of course, an ongoing struggle. Some moments and periods of our life provide more temptation than others, but no day goes by without it.

b. This usual Title Jesus uses, is Identified with Jesus’ earthly life.

Mar 2:10  But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to pardon sins" --He turned to the paralytic, and said,
Mar 2:27  And Jesus said to them: "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath;
Mar 2:28  so that the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."
Mat 8:20  "Foxes have holes," replied Jesus, "and birds have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."
Luk 19:10  For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."

c. The Title “SON OF MAN”, is also linked with His Sufferings on behalf of Humanity.
Mar 8:31  And now for the first time He told them, "The Son of Man must endure much suffering, and be rejected by the Elders and the High Priests and the Scribes, and be put to death, and after two days rise to life."

And with His Exaltation and His Rule over Humanity.
Mat 25:31  "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then will He sit upon His glorious throne,
Mat 26:24  The Son of Man is indeed going as is written concerning Him; but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It had been a happy thing for that man if he had never been born."

compare: Dan 7:13  I saw in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him.
Dan 7:14  And dominion and glory was given Him, and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations and languages, should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Jesus when referring to Himself as the “Son of Man”, He  conveys the Following: “I, the Son of God, am Man, in weakness, in suffering and even unto death. Yet I am still in touch with heaven from where I came and hold such a relationship to the Divine that i can forgive sins. Matt 9:6 and am superior to all religious regulations which are but temporary and of national significance. Matthew 12 : 8 This manhood shall not cease when I have passed through those last stages of suffering and death, which I must endure for the Salvation of mankind and to finish My Work….. I shall return to rule and reign over those whose nature I have assumed.

e. His Humanity was real and not make-believe.

He actually suffered hunger Mat 4:2  And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterwards hungry.
He was thirsty. Joh_19:28  After this, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, I thirst.

He was weary.Joh 4:6  And Jacob's well was there. Jesus, therefore, being wearied with His journey, sat thus upon the well. It was about the sixth hour.
Joh 4:7  A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, Give me to drink.

’He wept with grief at Lazarus’ tomb; Joh 11:35  Jesus wept.
Jesus Christ - The World's Savior and Redeemer, For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat ...

f. He was subjected to the all the infirmities of human nature yet without sin.

2Co_5:21  For He has made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Barnes Notes: For he hath made him to be sin for us - The Greek here is, ‘for him who knew no sin, he hath made sin, or a sin-offering for us.’ The design of this very important verse is, to urge the strongest possible reason for being reconciled to God. This is implied in the word (γὰρ  gar) “for.” Paul might have urged other arguments, and presented other strong considerations. But he chooses to present this fact, that Christ has been made sin for us, as embodying and concentrating all. It is the most affecting of all arguments; it is the one that is likely to prove most effectual. It is not indeed improper to urge on people every other consideration to induce them to be reconciled to God.
John Gill  “ Christ was made of a woman, took flesh of a sinful woman; though the flesh he took of her was not sinful, being sanctified by the Spirit of God, the former of Christ's human nature: however, he appeared "in the likeness of sinful flesh"; being attended with infirmities, the effects of sin, though sinless; and he was traduced by men as a sinner, and treated as such. Moreover, he was made a sacrifice for sin, in order to make expiation and atonement for it; so the Hebrew word חטאה signifies both sin and a sin offering; see Psa_40:6 Psa 40:6  Sacrifice and offering You did not desire; My ears You have opened; burnt offering and sin offering You have not asked.
and so αμαρτια, sin in Rom_8:3.  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh;

But besides all this, he was made sin itself by imputation; the sins of all his people were transferred unto him, laid upon him, and placed to his account; he sustained their persons, and bore their sins; and having them upon him, and being chargeable with, and answerable for them, he was treated by the justice of God as if he had been not only a sinner, but a mass of sin; for to be made sin, is a stronger expression than to be made a sinner: but now that this may appear to be only by imputation, and that none may conclude from hence.

sin ἁμαρτία hamartia Thayer Definition:
1) equivalent to 264
1a) to be without a share in
1b) to miss the mark
1c) to err, be mistaken
1d) to miss or wander from the path of uprightness and honour,to do or go wrong
1e) to wander from the law of God, violate God’s law, sin
2) that which is done wrong, sin, an offence, a violation of the divine law in thought or in act
3) collectively, the complex or aggregate of sins committed either by a single person or by many

God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. The person sending is God, who gave the law weakened by the flesh, against whom we have sinned: and who is righteous, pure, and holy: which considerations enhance his grace and goodness, in the mission of Christ. This must be understood of God the Father, who is here manifestly distinguished from the Son; and who is God, but not solely, or to the exclusion of the Son and Spirit; and who sent Christ, though not singly, for the "Lord God and his Spirit sent" him, Isa_48:16; though as it is most agreeable for a father to send his son, this is generally ascribed to him; and he being the first person in the Godhead, is the first in order of working, and so in redemption. John Gill

The Person of Our Lord Jesus Christ: c) The authority of Christ.

Memorize.
Isa 9:6  For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be on His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Wonderful Counsellor
JFB’s Commenatry : His essential characteristics shall be.
Wonderful — (See on Isa_8:18; Jdg_13:18, Margin; 1Ti_3:16).
Counsellor — (Psa_16:7; Rom_11:33, Rom_11:34; 1Co_1:24; Col_2:3).
mighty God — (Isa_10:21; Psa_24:8; Tit_2:13) Horsley translates: “God the mighty man.” “Unto us ... God” is equivalent to “Immanuel” (Isa_7:14).
everlasting Father — This marks Him as “Wonderful,” that He is “a child,” yet the “everlasting Father” (Joh_10:30; Joh_14:9). Earthly kings leave their people after a short reign; He will reign over and bless them for ever [Hengstenberg].
Prince of Peace — (See on Isa_9:5; Gen_49:10; Shiloh, “The Tranquillizer”). Finally (Hos_2:18). Even already He is “our peace” (Luk_2:14; Eph_2:14).

The government shall be upon his shoulder - That is, the ensign of government; the scepter, the sword, the key, or the like, which was borne upon or hung from the shoulder. See note on Isa_22:22.
And his name shall be called - אל גבור  El gibbor, the prevailing or conquering God.
The everlasting Father “The Father of the everlasting age” - Or אבי עד  Abi ad, the Father of eternity.
The Septuagint have μεγαλης βουλης Αγγελος, “the Messenger of the Great Counsel.” But instead of אבי אד  Abi ad, a MS. of De Rossi has אבעזר  Abezer, the helping Father; evidently the corruption of some Jew, who did not like such an evidence in favor of the Christian Messiah.
Prince of Peace - שר שלום  sar shalom, the Prince of prosperity, the Giver of all blessings.

Questions for Research and Review.

  1. What Bible Proof is there of the Deity and Humanity of Christ?
  2. What is the nature of the person of Christ?divine, human; or divine - human
  3. How can the Unity of the person of Christ be proved from Scripture?
  4. What are the main Errors concerning the Person of Christ?

The Deity of the Son of God. (Cont)
c. His Authority.
In Christ’s Teaching one notes a complete absence of such expressions as “It is my Opinion”; “It may be”; or “I think such and such…” etc.
A rationalistic Jewish scholar once admitted that he spoke with the Authority of, God Almighty Himself.

Dr. Henry Van Dyke points out that, in the Sermon on the Mount, we have:
the absolutely overwhelming sight of a believing Hebrew placing Himself above the rule of His own faith, a humble Teacher asserting supreme authority over all human conduct; a moral reformer discarding all other foundations and saying, “Whoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, which built his house upon a rock Matthew 7:24.” Ninety-four times in this brief record of the discourse of Jesus recurs with this solemn phrase with which he authenticates the truth. “Verily (truly, I say to you……” Notes from Myer Pearlman, Knowing the Doctrines of the Bible p.143

Matthew 28:18 Jesus said,” Jesus however came near and said to them, "All power in Heaven and over the earth has been given to me. “
All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth - The “Son of God,” as “Creator,” had an original right to all things, to control them and dispose of them. See Joh_1:3; Col_1:16-17; Heb_1:8. But the universe is put under him more particularly as Mediator, that he might redeem his people; that he might gather a church; that he might defend his chosen; that he might subdue all their enemies, and bring them off conquerors and more than conquerors, Eph_1:20-23; 1Co_15:25-27; Joh_5:22-23; Phi_2:6-11. It is in reference to this, doubtless, that he speaks here power or authority committed to him over all things, that he might redeem, defend, and save the church purchased with his own blood. His mediatorial government extends, therefore, over the material world, over angels, over devils, over wicked men, and over his own people. Barnes Notes

The Doctrine of the Person and Work of OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Introduction.
“His Birthday is kept across the World. His Death-day sets a gallows against every sky-line.. WHO IS HE? This is the question that everyone on planet earth has to answer.

Jesus, Himself, asked, “Whom do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” Peter gave the right answer when he replied, “ You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

The true explanation comes from the pages of the New Testament, written by man who knew Him best, and who for that Knowledge gave their lives. Notes from Myer pearlman: Knowing the Doctrines of the Bible.
Today we are going to look at the Nature of Christ  as
Answering Who is He?
  1. The Son of God. ( His Deity).

The title “Son of God” shows His Origin. He is born of God. Therefore this Title proclaims His Deity. He is not a son of God in a General Sense like men and angels even  though Arianists like the JW'S would like to Him to this. He is the Son of God in a very unique sense. Jesus is described as sustaining towards God a relationship not shared by any other on this planet.  Note the following:
  1. The Consciousness of Christ

What was the content of His Self Consciousness; i.e. what did He know about Himself?
Luke records that as a young boy He was conscious of two things:
  1. He had a special relationship to God His father and
  2. He had a special mission on earth  “His Father’s Business”.
The When and how this consciousness came to Him is a mystery. He was always the Son of God but at some point it dawned upon Him. Note these Scriptures:
Mat 3:17  And lo, a voice from Heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Here at the Jordan River after His Baptism the Voice of the Father corroborated and confirmed His Inner Consciousness.
Mat 4:3  And when the tempter came to Him, he said, If You are the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
Satan, himself, acknowledged that He was the Son of God.
Mat 16:15  He said to them, But who do you say I am?
Mat 16:16  And Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Peter gave testimony to His Deity and Messiahship.
Mat 26:63  But Jesus was silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, I adjure you by the living God that you tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.
Mat 26:64  Jesus said to him, You said it. I tell you more. From this time you shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of the heavens.
Mat 26:65  Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard his blasphemy.

b. The Claims of Christ Himself.

Joh 16:28  I came forth from the Father, and have come into the world. Again I leave the world and go to the Father.
Notes by Adam Clark
I came forth from the Father - With whom I existed from eternity in glory.
Am come into the world - By my incarnation.
I leave the world - By my death.
And go to the Father - By my ascension. These four words contain the whole economy of the Gospel of man’s salvation, and a consummate abridgment of the Christian faith. This gave the disciples a key to the whole of our Lord’s discourse; and especially to that part, Joh_16:16, that had so exceedingly embarrassed them, as appears by Joh_16:17, Joh_16:18.

Joh 20:21  Then Jesus said to them again, Peace to you. As My Father has sent Me, even so I send you.
A.C. As I was sent to proclaim the truth of the Most High, and to convert sinners to God, I send you for the very same purpose, clothed with the very same authority, and influenced by the very same Spirit.

Mat 11:27  All things are delivered to Me by My Father. And no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son will reveal Him.  He claimed a Divine Knowledge and Fellowship.

Joh 14:9  Jesus said to him, Have I been with you such a long time and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father. And how do you say, Show us the Father?
Joh 14:10  Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in Me? The Words that I speak to you I do not speak of Myself, but the Father who dwells in Me, He does the works.
Joh 14:11  Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the very works themselves.
He claimed to unveil the Fathers Being in Himself.M.Pearlman

In Mark 2:5-10 He assumes divine Prerogatives by showing He has power to forgive sins.

Joh 6:39  And this is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all which He has given Me I should lose nothing but should raise it up again at the last day.
Joh 6:40  And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes on Him should have everlasting life. And I will raise him up at the last day.

Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead
Joh 11:23  Jesus said to her, Your brother shall rise again.
Joh 11:24  Martha said to Him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
Joh 11:25  Jesus said to her, I am the Resurrection and the Life! He who believes in Me, though he die, yet he shall live.
Joh 11:26  And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?
Joh 11:27  She said to Him, Yes, Lord, I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who has come into the world.

Joh 5:22  For the Father judges no man, but has committed all judgment to the Son,
Joh 5:23  so that all should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
It is Jesus, the Son of God, who is the Judge and Arbiter of every man’s destiny.

Jesus demanded a surrender and allegiance of His Followers that only God could claim.
Mat 10:37  He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

Have you acknowledged that Jesus is the Christ the Son of the Living God. Have you surrendered you all to Him and truly become His follower for the rest of your days. Now is the Day of Salvation. If you confess your sin He is faithful and just to forgive your sin and TO CLEANSE YOU OF ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.
