The Doctrine of God of Creation: His Work on each of the six days.

Introduction.

There has been a great debate on whether the word “day” in six days of Creation means long periods of time or six ordinary days. In Genesis chapter one we have shown that the Hebrew word for day “yom”
a. primarily denotes an ordinary 24 hour day.
b. The repeated mention of “morning and evening” favours this interpretation.
c. It was evidently an ordinary day that the Creator set aside as a day of Rest. Sabbath.
d. In Exodus 20:9-11 Israel is commanded to labour for six days andto  rest on the seventh. Why? Because Jehovah made the heavens and the earth in six days and rested on the seventh.
e. When the Hebrew has numerals before “day” they are always an ordinary 24 hour day.
f. The last Three days are evidently ordinary days so the first three must be the same.
There are twelve words in Hebrew that can mean “day,” but the word that was used when referring to the days in the Creation week was “yom.”

Ten of those twelve available words mean longer periods of time, but “yom,” when used in the context of Genesis, always means a literal 24-hour day.  You can learn more about this word in the Strong’s Concordance (#3117).  For more information, see the article How long were the days in Genesis?”

This all points to a young earth. Christians believe that the Rock strata were laid down suddenly during the time of the flood when the whole earth was judged by God for its wickedness.

b. The Work of God on the Days of Creation.

  1. On the first day light was created, and by the separation of the light and the darkness, day and night were constituted. This does not conflict with the fact that the sun, moon and stars were created on the fourth day, because these in fact are not light but light bearers.
  2. The work of the second day was also a work of separation, the separation of the waters above from the waters below by the establishment of the Firmament or sky
  3. On the Third day the work of separation continued in the separation of the sea and the dry land. In addition to that the vegetable kingdom of plants and trees was establish. By the Word of His Power God caused the earth to bring forth plants, vegetables and fruit trees, each yielding after its kind.
  4. The fourth day brought the Creation of the Sun, Moon, and stars, to serve a variety of purposes: to divide the day from the night, to serve as signs of the weather conditions, to determine the seasons and the succession of the days, and years, and to function as lights for the earth.
  5. The Work of the fifth day consisted of the creation of the birds and fish, the inhabitants of the sky and the water.
  6. Finally on the sixth day,is marked as the climax of creation of the Work of Creation. The Land animals were created. Then the whole work was crowned by the Creation of Man in the Image of God. His body was formed out of the dust of the ground while his soul was an immediate creation of God when God breathed into His nostils the breathe of life.
  7. On the seventh day God rested from His creative work and delighted in the contemplation of all he had done.
